This is the first experience I’ve had reading one of this author’s book. I am so pleased to have discovered another fabulous author.
Zef is a motorbike stunt rider travelling in the carnival circuit for much of the year. Sara is fourteen years his junior who stowed away in his rig. This is the story of their journey.
At times I could have gladly shaken Zef but then again that just shows how involved you get with the story and its characters, a sign of a good writer I feel. Then at others I could have hugged him. Emotions run high in lots of scenes but Ollo’s big scene takes first prize, his character is amazing. I don’t think anyone could help liking him a lot and of course Bo, his monkey is adorable. My tears streamed down my face in places, the story that poignant. Other times I laughed out loud with mirth. All based on the incredible descriptions by the author. You truly feel a part of the story, even a part if the carnie family perhaps!
The bonds of different types of families are linked and highlighted in the story giving you a heartwarming feeling. The growth in Zef is especially noticeable but then again he tells most of the story with only a little bit from Sara’s point of view. Zef sums it up well in the story..”…and yeah, we were a family. A crazy, unmatched, sprawling mess of friends who’d become more.”
Unfortunately, although this is a standalone book, I read it first..now I will go back and read the rest of the series!
